Game 2 Preview
After their Game 1 win in Adelaide, Queensland is favored to secure the series victory in the second State of Origin match in Brisbane. Meanwhile, New South Wales must win at the hostile Suncorp Stadium to keep the series alive, a feat they achieved only once in 1998.
With a dominant record at the venue, Queensland has won 38 out of 59 games, including 19 out of 26 since the stadium’s redevelopment in 2003. They have won five of the last six games at Suncorp, with their only loss being the 26-0 defeat in Game II of the 2021 series.
Queensland coach Billy Slater has made three changes to the Maroons side following their Adelaide victory. Jeremiah Nanai replaces the suspended player in the back row, Moeaki Fotuaika returns from the bench, and Xavier Coates takes a wing position. Reuben Cotter starts from the bench, potentially swapping with Lindsay Collins. AJ Brimson is the team’s, 18th man.

New South Wales coach Brad Fittler has also made four changes to the team that lost in Adelaide. Damien Cook replaces the injured Apisai Koroisau, Mitchell Moses takes the halfback role over Nicho Hynes, Stefano Utoikamanu and Reece Robson debit from the bench, and Stephen Crichton replaces the injured Latrell Mitchell. Matt Burton joins as the 18th man. Reports suggest Robson may start with Cook on the bench.
Keaton Koloamatangi is the 19th man, while Cameron Murray and Liam Martin are expected to recover in time to play.
Queensland’s forward pack outperformed their opponents in Game I, with Reuben Cotter named the player of the match. On a fast, dry track, the Maroons’ forwards must maintain their performance to secure the series.
New South Wales captain James Tedesco admitted to overplaying his hand in the Game I loss, and the team aims to improve. They need better performances, especially as only three forwards ran over 100 meters in Adelaide. Strong defense will be crucial to force a decider in Sydney.

Queensland Maroons Team News
Queensland has made three adjustments to their lineup for game 1 due to injuries. The absences of Tom Gilbert, Jai Arrow, and Selwyn Cobbo create significant gaps in the back row. To address this, Titans prop Moeaki Fotuaika has regained his position and will now be on the bench. Jeremiah Nanai, who has served his suspension, has been named in the starting side as a direct replacement for Gilbert. Additionally, Xavier Coates from the Storm will take Cobbo’s place on the wing.
Corey Horsburgh, who has been in impressive form for the Raiders, has been chosen as the 19th man to provide coverage for any last-minute forward injuries. Unfortunately, experienced player Christian Welch from the Storm and Maroons did not make the selection. AJ Brimson will replace Tom Dearden as the 18th man for game 2.
Tino Fa’asuamaleaui, despite being placed on report for a raised arm incident against the Tigers in Round 15, has managed to avoid suspension. Tom Flegler, who was involved in a high tackle on Tom Trbojevic during Game 1, has been cleared to play and will join the game from the bench.

New South Wales Blues Team News
NSW has made several injury-induced changes for Game 2. Nathan Cleary and Api Koroisau will be sidelined for six weeks, and Cameron Murray’s groin injury puts his participation in doubt.
Mitchell Moses replaces Nicho Hynes as the halfback due to Hynes’ recent drop in form. Reece Robson takes the utility spot on the bench, and Damien Cook returns to the starting lineup, replacing Koroisau.
Latrell Mitchell remains unavailable, with Stephen Crichton stepping in. Tom Trbojevic is cleared to play after recovering from a concussion.
Keaton Koloamatangi is the 19th man for potential back-row dropouts, and Liam Martin must pass concussion protocols. Matt Burton replaces Mitchell in the starting lineup. Tevita Pangai Junior is not selected, and Stefano Utoikamanu makes his Origin debut, replacing Pangai Junior on the bench, while Junior Paulo joins the starting side.
Head to Head
Queensland won the 2022 series 2-1, securing victories in Games 1 and 3 through closely fought matches. However, they suffered a heavy defeat of 44-12 by New South Wales in Game 2, which took place in Perth.
In terms of the overall series head-to-head, Queensland holds the lead with a score of 22-16, including two draws.
Since the three-game series format began in 1982, New South Wales has the advantage in Game 2 wins, leading with a score of 24-17. The Blues have also won the last five consecutive Game 2 matches, three of which they won while being 1-0 down in the series.
When playing at Suncorp, Queensland has a dominant record of 38-21. It is worth noting that in all Game 2 contests held at Suncorp, Queensland has a record of 9-3.
