Indy 500 Race Day

Every Memorial Day weekend, the city of Speedway, Indiana, and the sprawling Indianapolis Motor Speedway come alive with the excitement of one of the most iconic events in motorsports: the Indianapolis 500. Fans worldwide flock to the massive facility to celebrate patriotism, high-speed racing, and the joy of partying, especially in the infield and infamous Snake Pit.

Outside the track, visitors camp and tailgate in lots and backyards of the surrounding neighborhoods, building anticipation for the main event. Once inside, the pre-race ceremonies commence, featuring moving performances of God Bless America, The Star Spangled Banner, and Taps in honor of the soldiers who have sacrificed their lives for freedom. The crowd favorite, Back Home Again in Indiana, pays tribute to the Hoosier state. As the flyover and invocation wrap up, the drivers hear the most famous words in racing: “Drivers, start your engines!”

The sound of 33 engines roaring to life signals the start of the race, and the drivers battle for 200 laps around the 2.5-mile oval track in pursuit of immortality as an Indy 500 champion. The winners and their cars are lifted onto the podium, where the champion receives a floral wreath and a ceremonial bottle of milk, a beloved tradition. The victorious driver also kisses the famed bricks at the start/finish line and has their likeness immortalized on the Borg-Warner Trophy, forever cementing their place in racing history.
