United States Grand Prix Preview

The Formula 1 calendar took a much-needed week-long break following the grueling Qatar Grand Prix, during which several drivers required medical attention. The F1 circuit now makes its way back to the United States for the second out of three races scheduled in America for 2023, marking the beginning of a triple-header spanning the next three weeks.

Formula 1 United States Grand Prix 2023 Preview

Although no titles remain up for grabs in Formula 1 2023, there are still five race victories to compete for.

In the previous race in Qatar, Max Verstappen secured the championship title. Consequently, the focus shifts to whether Red Bull’s Sergio Perez can outperform Lewis Hamilton to secure second place.

Pressure is mounting on Perez, who holds a contract to stay with Red Bull for the 2024 season, following yet another disappointing performance that saw him retire from the Sprint and finish in 10th place at the Qatar Grand Prix.

Formula 1 United States Grand Prix 2023 Preview

Perez currently maintains a 30-point advantage over Hamilton, who aims to rebound from his collision with Mercedes teammate George Russell. Mercedes plans to introduce a new car floor in Austin, although significant improvements are not anticipated as they strive to close the gap with Red Bull before 2024.

In the constructors’ championship, Ferrari is trailing Mercedes by only 28 points, intensifying the competition for the second position. Additionally, McLaren has closed the gap to Aston Martin to within 11 points, fighting for fourth place, thanks to strong showings by Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris, who secured a double podium finish in Qatar.

For the first time in F1 history, there are consecutive Sprint weekends on the calendar, ensuring competitive sessions throughout Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

Spanning 20 turns and covering 5.5km, COTA is designed to encapsulate the best elements of various F1 circuits. Notable features include corner replicas reminiscent of tracks like Silverstone and Istanbul Park, necessitating cars to be optimized for high-speed corners with ample downforce.

Circuit of the Americas - f1

The initial ascent to Turn 1 is distinctive to this venue. Sector 1 comprises high-speed curves, resembling the renowned Maggotts and Becketts complex at Silverstone and the Esses at Suzuka. On the other hand, sector three presents a tight, intricate technical section akin to Hockenheim’s stadium corners, offering to entice yet challenging overtaking opportunities.

With two DRS zones located on the pit straight and a 1.1km back straight, drivers have strategic chances to gain positions at the end of these zones, often attempting daring moves into the tight hairpin corners.

Past Highlights and On-Track Battles:

In the 2022 event at COTA, exciting on-track battles unfolded. Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc engaged in thrilling duels, showcasing their prowess throughout different sectors. Verstappen ultimately secured a critical overtake in sector three, setting the tone for an action-packed race.

Spectator Tips:

Spectators have various excellent vantage points to choose from. The main grandstand on the start-finish straight offers in-seat food and drinks service, embodying American-style comfort.

Meanwhile, the stand at Turn 1 provides a scenic view extending all the way to downtown Austin. For those seeking an up-close view of racing action, the Stadium Section stands at Turns 15/16 offer a great experience.

Weather Forecast For USA GP

Following the demanding race at Losail, drivers might have expected some relief in the form of rain in Austin, Texas. However, this weekend is projected to be quite hot, with on-track temperatures reaching a peak of 33°C during ‘Sprint Saturday’ and 32°C for the Grand Prix.

Throughout the race weekend at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, expect predominantly sunny and warm weather, accompanied by a minimal possibility of rain. The race is expected to commence with temperatures around 30 degrees Celsius on Sunday, characterized by bright and sunny conditions.
